St Patrick’s Math Superstars Program

It’s time for Math Superstars 2011-2012!

Math Superstars is a voluntary academic enrichment program offered by the PTO.

 Students   Would you like to:
  • Explore new ways of thinking about math and problem solving
  • Have the opportunity to participate in special math challenges
  • Earn dress down passes, and other fun prizes
If your answer is YES to any of the above, welcome to Math Superstars!

Beginning Thursday, September 29th, you will be given the first math worksheet to take home. You have one week to complete the worksheet, and turn it in. Try to answer as many problems as you can.
There are only two rules to follow….
·         You may seek help with reading the questions and understanding them (parents/helpers can provide helpful hints), but you solve the problems yourself.
·         You have one week to work on the math worksheet and turn it in.

Rewards!! Every 5 weeks, you can earn a dress down day pass for completing 5 worksheets! Math Superstars will have a special recognition day and a reward at the end of the year.

With each of the Holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving, there will be one special Math Challenge question. If you turn in your answer, (put it in the special box by the school office) you will be in the drawing for a chance to choose a prize from the Math Challenge Treasure Chest.
One winner will be chosen from each grade.

Please noteThe first worksheet will go out to all students. Once you turn the worksheet in, you will be added to the Math Superstars Roster. If at any time you no longer wish to participate, just return the worksheet with a note to the grader letting them know you wish to be removed from the roster.
Grades 1-3 will have 20 worksheets, weekly September 29th through March 15
Grades 4-5 will have 10 worksheets, weekly September 29th through December 8th
Kindergarten will have 10 worksheets. weekly January 12th through March 15th

Parents Your role in Math Superstars is to encourage and facilitate problem-solving skills. Feel free to suggest a strategy for solving the problem, offer counters or a manipulative, or listen as your child shares her or his thinking, but please do not provide the answers. ?It is normal for a child not to be able to complete every problem on a worksheet. Remind your child that he or she is not expected to know the answer to every problem. Each problem is ranked according to its level of difficulty. The number of stars you see beside a problem indicates the level of difficulty. Volunteers will check the worksheets and they will be returned.  Math Superstars Information, Worksheets and Guidelines will be available on the school website and available to download.
