Accelerated Reader

What is A/R?
Accelerated Reader is a program that couples students’ natural interest in technology with reading practice to increase their skills in both areas. Students read books and take short computer-based tests to check their comprehension. The program tracks their progress (in both quality and quantity) and awards points for successful completion of these tasks.

How can my child participate?
At St. Pat’s, teachers use Accelerated Reader to enhance classroom reading instruction. Every teacher uses a different approach and will have different requirements and expectations. Your teacher will inform you of when and how he or she will use A/R in the classroom.

Is A/R only for the classroom reading instruction?
No, A/R is for any independent reader in grades 2-5 who has experience with the program. First grade teachers typically encourage use as their students’ abilities grow. The library is open both before school and after school daily for student test-taking.

Where do parents fit in?
Parents can access an Accelerated Reader parent page to monitor their child’s progress.  Login to the site using the following link: https://hosted95.renlearn.com/39772/.  Don't know or can't remember your username and password?  Contact Lisa Lehmuller 704.333.3174 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. When can we start?
By now your teachers should have notified families and students about how the A/R program works in their classrooms. If you have any questions, ask them. They will provide reminders about how to use the program correctly, talk to students about picking a “just right book”, and discuss goals. Mrs. Lehmuller can help with any problems you have navigating the web site, or helping your child identify books that are good choices for him or her.

Is the program the same as last year?
Teachers found that the program was most successful when it was used as part of the reading curriculum rather than as extrinsically rewarded enrichment. There will be some prizes awarded, but they will be awarded late in the year as a recognition for participation.
